Scouting Report: Daulton Hommes
Daulton Hommes is an elite level shooter, maybe even one of the best I’ve seen so far this season. He is one of the top scorers in the Italian league at the moment which is one of the best national leagues in Europe and averages 17.7 points per game . His shooting percentages are really high (43.4 %) even though he takes more than 7 three point shots per game (68/157 in 22 games).

VIDEO REPORT:
OFFENSE
Shooting: Great shooter. Moves really fluidly without the ball, comes prepared out of screens and doesn’t need much space or time to pull the trigger. His shooting motion is smooth be it on catch & shoots or off the dribble. Operates mostly from the top and most of his shots are from that area but can sink shots from other positions too. Has a high shot release that is not blocked that easily but with his good footwork and body moves he can create some separation.
Off-ball movement: His off-ball movements are on a really high level and has a great spatial awareness of where he should stand and where the playmaker can find him for an open shot. There are also some pindowns and some pick & pop sets run for him to get him an open look.
Isolation: Can create some space with his dribbles but is limited as a player in isolation. His handles are solid but not really a player that would excel at playing 1on1. Struggles against better defenders and usually opts for an off the dribble shot in those situations and rarely goes all the way to the rim. With his strong upper body and good size he can even post up some players and take a fadeaway shot which usually looks good and most of those shots are going in. If he improves in this area so he can attack with drives all the way to the rim, this would open even more opportunities for him to score and be a complete scorer in offense but at the moment, he is more a player that operates off ball and needs a playmaker to deliver him passes so he can shoot and score.
Playmaking/Basketball IQ: Hommes is also showing some basketball IQ in some of his plays in offense. Even though he is a high usage player, he knows that not all shots are good enough and can dish some nice passes to open teammates when the defense gravitates towards him. Reads the defense well and if he sees a smaller player on him, he will usually go to work down low and try to create some advantage on low post.
DEFENSE
Perimeter defense: He is not the worst defender and can defend on perimeter and strong enough to hold his stance on post ups. His hips look a little stiff and his reactions can sometimes be on the slower side but knows how to slide his feet and cover the ground. Has some limitations as an athlete since his athleticism is not on an elite level but still can defend most of the wings in Europe.
Off-ball defense: On closeouts he can be sometimes a little too late and let the offensive player get some crucial advantage. But even with that in mind, he can recover pretty well and still manage to contest most of his shots. Also decently runs around screens if he is guarding a shooting wing.
Post up defense: As already mentioned before due to his strong upper body he is not moved that easily on post ups. This offers so much versatility to the coach when he has a player that can defend on perimeter and also on post ups and Hommes can do both on a solid level.
Rebounding: Not the most athletic player that would jump really high but has a good feel where the ball is going and goes for rebounds. Cremona has some other good rebounders but in other teams Hommes rebounding numbers could be even better, especially if he will be used as a 4 and defending closer to the rim. In some possessions he also showed his instincts for rebounds on the offensive end where he brought his team some second chance points.
SUMMARY
Daulton Hommes is definitely a player that should be in the notes of every team on the highest level in Europe. A wing that can shoot the ball really well and also also can defend on perimeter and low post and that is not easy to find. If you find the right role for him in your team, he will deliver.
Jarrell Eddie is a similar type of a shooting wing and he had some great games in Euroleague for Fenerbahce this season but Hommes is much more than just a pure shooter and I wouldn’t be surprised if Hommes climbs the ladder to the top level in Europe really quickly.
